What Is a WHOIS Lookup?

A WHOIS lookup queries the public database that stores registration information for every domain name on the internet. When someone registers a domain, their contact details, registration dates and technical information are recorded in this database and made publicly accessible.

WHOIS data is used by domain investors to check expiry dates, by cybersecurity researchers to identify malicious domain owners, by legal teams for intellectual property enforcement, and by anyone curious about who owns a particular website or when a domain was first registered.

Since 2018, GDPR regulations have led many registrars to redact personal contact information from public WHOIS records for domains registered in Europe. This is why many records now show privacy-protected or redacted in the registrant fields.

For many domains, registrant details are now redacted due to privacy regulations. However, business domains often still show the registering organization. How do I check if a domain is about to expire?

What are name servers in WHOIS?

Name servers are the DNS servers responsible for translating the domain name into IP addresses. They tell the internet where to find the website, email and other services associated with the domain. Changing name servers is how you move a domain from one hosting provider to another.

What does clientTransferProhibited mean?

This is an EPP status code that prevents the domain from being transferred to a different registrar without the owner first unlocking it. It is a security measure that protects against unauthorized domain hijacking. Most actively used domains have this status enabled.

How often is WHOIS data updated?

WHOIS data is updated in real time when domain registration details change. However, DNS propagation and third-party database caches can cause delays of a few hours to 48 hours before changes are visible globally across all WHOIS servers.
