What Is a Proxy Server?

A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the websites you visit. When you connect through a proxy, websites see the proxy server's IP address instead of your real one. This masks your true location and identity from the destination server.

Proxies are used for a wide range of purposes — from bypassing geographic restrictions and maintaining privacy to web scraping and security research. However, they are also commonly used by bots, spammers, and fraudsters to hide their real identity when conducting malicious activity.

This tool identifies whether an IP address belongs to a proxy service, VPN provider, Tor exit node, datacenter, or is a genuine residential ISP connection by analysing ASN data, organization names, and known hosting provider signatures.

Types of Proxy IPs

VPN Exit Node
An IP belonging to a commercial VPN provider. Traffic exits the VPN tunnel through this address. Very common among privacy-conscious users.
Tor Exit Relay
A publicly listed Tor exit relay. Traffic exits the Tor network through this node. Associated with very high anonymity and also frequently used for abuse.
Datacenter / Hosting
An IP registered to a cloud provider or datacenter such as AWS, DigitalOcean or Hetzner. Often used by servers, bots, scrapers and proxy services.
Residential ISP
A genuine residential internet connection assigned to a home or business by a consumer ISP. The lowest risk classification for most use cases.

What is the difference between a proxy and a VPN?
A proxy handles specific types of traffic, typically HTTP or SOCKS requests, and does not encrypt your connection. A VPN encrypts all traffic from your device and routes it through a secure tunnel. VPNs offer stronger privacy but proxies are faster for simple IP masking tasks.
Can websites detect that I am using a proxy?
Yes. Websites use IP reputation databases, ASN analysis, and behavioral signals to detect proxy and VPN usage. Datacenter IPs are particularly easy to detect. Residential proxies are much harder to identify because they appear to be genuine home connections.
What is a residential proxy?
A residential proxy routes traffic through real home IP addresses provided by ISPs to actual consumers. Because the IPs appear to be genuine residential connections, they are much harder for websites to detect and block compared to datacenter proxies.
What does the risk score mean?
The risk score from 0 to 100 indicates the likelihood that this IP is used for anonymization or automated traffic. A score above 70 indicates a strong proxy or VPN signal. A score below 20 indicates a clean residential connection with no known proxy activity.
Is using a proxy illegal?
Using a proxy or VPN is legal in most countries. However, using proxies to commit fraud, bypass terms of service, or conduct unauthorized access to systems is illegal regardless of the tool used. Check local regulations if you are in a country with internet censorship laws.
How accurate is this tool?
The tool uses ASN data and organization name analysis from multiple geolocation APIs to classify IPs. Datacenter and well-known VPN providers are detected with high accuracy. Residential proxies and private setups may not be detected as they appear identical to regular consumer connections.
