What Is a DNS Leak?

When you use a VPN, all of your internet traffic — including DNS queries — should route through the encrypted VPN tunnel. A DNS leak happens when your device sends DNS queries outside the tunnel, directly to your ISP's DNS servers instead of the VPN's DNS servers.

This means that even though your IP address is hidden by the VPN, your ISP can still see every website you visit through your DNS requests. Your browsing history is exposed despite the VPN being active.

DNS leaks are extremely common. Studies show that over 68 percent of VPN users have detectable DNS leaks — most of them without knowing it. The only way to verify your VPN is not leaking DNS is to run a test like this one.

How to Fix a DNS Leak

Enable DNS Leak Protection
Open your VPN client settings and look for a DNS leak protection toggle. Most reputable VPNs have this built in. Enable it and reconnect.

Switch to a Better VPN
If your VPN does not offer DNS leak protection or continues to leak after enabling it, switch to a provider that uses its own encrypted DNS servers by default.

Configure DNS Manually
Set your system DNS to a privacy-focused resolver such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Quad9 (9.9.9.9). This reduces but does not fully eliminate DNS leaks without a proper VPN.

Will a VPN always prevent DNS leaks?
No. Many VPNs leak DNS by default or fail after reconnecting. A VPN must be explicitly configured to route all DNS queries through its own servers and block any outside DNS requests to prevent leaks reliably.
What is a DNS server?
A DNS server translates domain names like google.com into IP addresses your browser can connect to. Every DNS query you make goes through a DNS server, which means whoever operates that server can see every domain name you look up.
Can incognito mode prevent DNS leaks?
No. Incognito mode only prevents your browser from saving local history. DNS queries still go through your operating system and ISP regardless of browser mode. A VPN is required to route DNS through an encrypted tunnel.
How do I know if my DNS is leaking right now?

Is DNS-over-HTTPS the same as using a VPN?
No. DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) encrypts only your DNS queries between your browser and a DNS resolver. It does not hide your IP address or encrypt other traffic. You still need a VPN for full anonymity.
