What Is an IPv6 Leak?

An IPv6 leak occurs when your device has both an IPv4 and IPv6 address (dual-stack) but your VPN only encrypts and tunnels IPv4 traffic. When you visit a website that supports IPv6, your browser connects directly using your real IPv6 address — completely bypassing the VPN tunnel.

This exposes your true identity to the website even though your IPv4 address is hidden. Because IPv6 addresses are often tied directly to your ISP account and geographic location, an IPv6 leak can be more personally revealing than an IPv4 leak.

Most home internet connections now support dual-stack IPv4/IPv6. Many VPN providers still do not fully support IPv6 tunneling, making IPv6 leaks one of the most common and overlooked privacy vulnerabilities for VPN users.

How to Fix an IPv6 Leak

Enable IPv6 Leak Protection
Check your VPN client settings for an IPv6 leak protection or IPv6 kill switch option. Enable it and reconnect. This blocks all IPv6 traffic when the VPN is active.

Disable IPv6 on Your System
On Windows go to Network Adapter Settings and uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6. On macOS use Network Preferences to disable IPv6 per interface. This prevents any IPv6 traffic from being sent.

Use a VPN provider that tunnels both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic through the encrypted connection. This is the most complete fix and allows you to keep IPv6 enabled on your device.

Is disabling IPv6 safe?
