Anonymous Browsing Explained

The facts about online privacy that most guides leave out.

Anonymous browsing is accessing the internet without exposing your true IP address, location, or identity to websites, advertisers, or your ISP. Every connection you make without protection is logged at the server level and at the ISP level simultaneously.

The most widely used tools for anonymous browsing are VPNs, which encrypt traffic and replace your IP with a server address; proxy servers, which act as intermediaries for specific requests; and Tor, which routes connections through multiple volunteer-operated encrypted relays.

None of these tools are foolproof. A VPN can fail silently through DNS leaks, where DNS queries bypass the VPN tunnel entirely. Browsers can expose your real IP via the WebRTC API even when a VPN is active. And browser fingerprinting can track you across sites without using your IP at all. The tools on this site test for all of these exposures.

Does incognito mode make you anonymous?
No. Incognito only prevents your browser from saving local history. Your IP address, ISP logs, and every server you connect to still record the visit. A VPN or Tor is required for actual anonymity.
Can my ISP see my traffic if I use a VPN?
With a properly configured VPN, your ISP can see that you are connected to a VPN server but cannot read the content of your traffic or identify the specific sites you visit.
What is a DNS leak and why does it matter?
A DNS leak happens when your DNS queries are sent through your ISP instead of through your VPN tunnel. This exposes every domain name you visit to your ISP even though your traffic appears encrypted.
How do I know if my VPN is actually working?
